Philosophy / December 23, 2019

The year is drawing to a close

And the Christmas holiday is almost here.

It can be a beautiful time with family and friends when we make an extra effort to connect with those who make our lives meaningful, and I am reminded that our human and animal companions are the true riches in our lives. The bonds of friendship mean much more than any material goods we might acquire. And here at Animal Alliance of Canada I am grateful for every wonderful person I have met through the years while doing this work. I am grateful for every one of you.

When I think of friends and family, I include all of you. Our donors, supporters, and fellow advocates lift us up and encourage us to continue our difficult work. I am grateful for every one of you who rescues, advocates, volunteers, lobbies, donates, and writes letters. Every one of you who provides a loving home to an animal, and who lives in harmony with the wild animals around you is a hero in my book. Thank you for being a friend to the animals who share your lives.

Some of you take care of feral cats in colonies, foster dogs in your homes, volunteer at farmed animal sanctuaries, or attend city council meetings to advocate for protection of animals. Many of you take the time to stay informed about the various political issues that affect animals. You are willing to expose yourself to often uncomfortable information so that you can write emails and letters to advocate for animals. Every one of these actions means so much. Organizations like ours depend on the vast army of compassionate Canadians who include animals in their “circle of compassion.”

Please know that we are always aware that you are out there, and that each of you contributes in your own way. In the almost thirty years that we have done our work under the Animal Alliance of Canada banner, it’s you, our supporters, friends, donors, and colleagues who make all of our actions for animals possible. Every AAC staff member and board member also wants you to know how appreciated you are.

Our four cat friends who share our office would thank you too, I am sure. We give them the best life that we can, and they always remind us how deeply emotional, how intelligent and unique every animal is. It’s always for them, every action we take. Animals are always on our minds and in our hearts, as I know is true for all of you as well. Together we do noble work, protecting those who can never defend themselves.

Have a happy and loving holiday season, and please accept my deepest thanks and love for you all.

With gratitude,
