Every year Health Canada, through its Pest Management Review Agency, permits thousands of wild animals to die prolonged and painful deaths by poisoning.
Strychnine, Compound 1080 and Sodium Cyanide are legally used for what is termed “Vertebrate Pest Control”. Under this regime, wolves, coyotes, bears, skunks, Richardson Ground Squirrels and Pocket Gophers are all targeted by one of these poisons.
Documented Cruelty
Every year the widespread and poorly regulated use of these indiscriminate poisons result in the agonizing and painful deaths of the target species and also pet dogs, endangered species, and other non-target animals. In Alberta alone, since 2005, about 1200 wolves have been killed, some by poison. During that same time period, 250 animals from non-target species were also poisoned. In the Canadian Veterinary Medical Journal (2015) a retrospective study of canine strychnine poisoning in Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba between 1998 and 2013, there were 93 cases in which dogs were poisoned
Organizations speaking out
Wolf Awareness, International Fund for Animal Welfare, Animal Alliance, the Animal Protection Party of Canada and others have joined forces to get all three pesticides banned from use in Canada. Our position is supported by many expert organizations including the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association and the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association.
Now, for the first time, Health Canada is seeking input from Canadians “on how the humaneness of pesticides to control vertebrate predators should be considered during their approval and use”.
Please add your voice to the public consultation
Let the Government of Canada know that humaneness must absolutely be considered when deciding whether to register poisons. And when it comes to the cruel and indiscriminate poisons currently being used to kill wolves, bears, and coyotes in Canada – strychnine, sodium cyanide, and compound 1080 – there is sufficient scientific evidence to conclude that these poisons are inhumane and should not be used.
