For 34 years, Animal Alliance of Canada has been working tirelessly to protect dogs and cats from being used in harmful research, testing, and teaching. Our No Pets in Research campaign continues to make significant strides, but the work is not over yet.
The introduction of Bill 75 (Schedule I) represents a significant shift in Ontario’s approach to the use of dogs and cats in research. The prohibition on invasive medical research on cats and dogs, along with the ban on purpose-breeding, is an important and welcome development that signals a meaningful commitment to improving animal protection. However, despite these advances, Schedule I as currently presented contains notable gaps and structural weaknesses that limit its effectiveness in fully protecting animals’ interests.
While the Ontario Premier’s commitment is a landmark step, no ban is currently in effect, and the proposed changes are incomplete. We continue to urge the government to implement stronger, enforceable regulations that will close loopholes, ensure ethical oversight is established, and mandate greater transparency to the public.
Our Recent Advocacy Efforts
Animal Alliance has been actively engaging with government officials to advocate for stronger protections in Bill 75 and the proposed regulatory amendments to Ontario’s Animals for Research Act. Recently, we have:
- Submitted detailed memos to provincial decision-makers outlining the ethical, scientific, and public policy considerations that are essential to ensuring full protections
- Participated in public consultation periods with comprehensive recommendations for amending Ontario’s Animals for Research Act
- Established an expert Advisory Group on Humane Science, comprised of scientists, veterinarians, medical doctors, and academics to strengthen our advocacy efforts
