Snow Geese

Twenty years ago the Humane Society of the United States and the Animal Protection Institute (now Born Free USA) co-published a booklet called A Critical Evaluation of the Proposed Reduction in the Mid-Continent Lesser Snow Geese Population to Conserve Sub-Arctic Salt Marshes of Hudson Bay.

The original document was co-authored by Dr. Vernon Thomas and Barry Kent MacKay. We are providing a 20th anniversary Addendum Update to that document, now converted into electronic form. Most of the Evaluation was written by Dr. Thomas, who is to be congratulated for his courage in challenging the conventional wisdom that these goose populations are “overabundant” and damaging to the arctic and subarctic ecosystems.
