We are Seeking Advocates Residing in By-Election Ridings

This season brings both a federal and a set of Ontario provincial by-elections — and they’re a rare chance to put animal protection issues directly in front of candidates who are actively seeking votes and paying close attention to what matters to their constituents.

If you live in one of the ridings below, this is your moment to make sure animal welfare is part of the conversation.

Federal By-Election — August 31

Ridings:

  • Beaches–East York (ON)
  • Chicoutimi–Le Fjord (QC)
  • North Vancouver–Capilano (BC)

Priority issue: Ending the use of live piglets in military trauma training exercises.

Piglets used in these exercises are subjected to invasive injuries for military medical training purposes, despite the existence of validated non-animal alternatives already in use by allied forces. Candidates in these ridings need to hear that voters care about ending this practice.

Ontario Provincial By-Elections — September 3

Ridings:

  • Scarborough Southwest
  • York–Simcoe
  • Hamilton East–Stoney Creek

Priority issue: Ending the use of primates in invasive medical research — particularly in light of the invasive neurological experiments on nine primates still held at York University — and York’s reluctance to engage with us directly.

Provincial candidates in these ridings can be pushed to take a public position on primate research oversight and the future of the animals held at York.

Live in One of the Above Ridings? Here’s How You Can Help

Sign up for the Animal Alliance Advocacy Network (A³ Network) so we can connect with you directly. We’ll be in touch with targeted action items — local events where candidates will be present, how and where to reach candidates directly, and talking points and language you can use when you connect with them.

Live Outside the Above Ridings? You Can Still Help

We encourage you to also sign up for the A³ Network so we can reach out to you with targeted actions when the opportunities arise.
